Santa Barbara is a great place to go to school. I love the small town feel and living on the water. Davis is wayyyy boring...

Chris Yeh - 05/04/2009 10:18
From a practical standpoint, Davis has a lot going for it. But will you be happy there?

FeeFee - 05/04/2009 12:02
I think it all depends on whether you have visited these schools and can see yourself actually attending. It took one visit to UCD to KNOW I could never, ever be happy there.

Also, in the end, what is your true goal at these universities? Is it to get prestige? Is it to save money? Is it to get a degree? Is it to enjoy the college experience? I mean, there's a big difference between someone whose main purpose at college is to save as much money as possible and someone who really wants a degree from a prestigious university and someone who simply wants to learn as much as humanly possible about a subject he is truly passionate about.

Good luck!

FeeFee- yes good points. The brand is a hard thing to pass up. There are multiple facets at play between all those points you raise and I'm trying to find a balance between the two.

Since the entire point of my return to school is about attending a tier one MBA program I can't help but be drawn to the branding and prestige factor of a school, but is that really whats the most important?

mikemikemike - 05/04/2009 17:03
I really can't vote on the school yet. What a difficult decision. I wrote you on cc. HIT ME UP! :)

Donny - 05/04/2009 20:26
I say go to Davis. The only reason I didn't choose santa barbara is because you said your not interested in straight Econ. Theres no point in majoring in that if your not going to be satisfied with it your whole life.

Columbia all the way! Consider the opportunity cost of picking Columbia over the rest, once you finish your undergrad, you're basically set, even if you don't make it to Harvard you still have Columbia to fall back on, on your resume! Second choice, I would pick U of T (I'm from Toronto, so kinda biased...) however, the majority of undergrads that have gone to U of T, have also gone on to Harvard as well. But anyways best of luck!

Harvard Or Bust - 05/04/2009 21:50
Jaron - yes, you are correct regard the Op Costs of a Columbia degree - however, are they enough to counter balance the almost $140,000 costs? I'm struggling with that currently and from the many business leaders I've spoken to as well as the admissions depts in MBA programs, the answer seems to be closer to "No."

Toronto won't give me an answer until I send them my very last grade at the end of this term. I don't know why they are being so finicky. I took 9 classes this term, have 8 A's and one In Progress. Do they really think I'm going to Fail this last class? Ugh. Just annoyed...

Columbia - there is a thing that brand cachet will never replace. You can get a the same education anywhere, but looking back upon your years, you'll yearn for the NYC experience that 132k will never trump.
