I have just officially applied the University of California system. California has a very early application deadline of November 31st, but luckily you can apply to all schools in the system with one application and one set of essays. I decided on (listed in order of preference):
Unfortunately, I do not think my chances at Berkeley or UCLA are very good. I was advised by the admissions counselors at both schools, that they have an initial cut off GPA of 3.0 and 3.3 respectively. Even with getting straight A's this term, that will only bring my cumulative GPA to a 2.83, which is below the cutoff. I hope they focus on my current academic situation as opposed to my prior years.
As promised, I will post my essay responses once I have received all the acceptance or denial letters in later April. For the California system you had to respond to two essay prompts using a maximum of 1,000 words total. The questions were the following:
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are?
What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field - such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities - and what you have gained from your involvement.
- Berkeley - Political Economy of Industrialized Societies
- Davis - International Relations
- UCLA - Economics
- Santa Barbara - Economics
